I have often wondered who and where I would be today if my parents could not afford a good education for me. Because of my mother’s own education and her inspiring passion for learning, today I am financially independent, in near-perfect health, happy, and content–with my own beautifully educated and successful children!

Did you know that there are 100 million children in India who are functionally illiterate? That school attendance declined from 73.4% in 2007 to 70.9% in 2011? Pratham’s impact is even more important than ever. By 2011 over 33 million children have been reached by Pratham’s Read India program and many more have benefited from other programs.

That is why I passionately give my full support and hard earned pension to Pratham, whose mission provides a unique, efficient, highly skilled, and perfectly assessed means to teach the millions of children in our home country who cannot afford, or have access to, a good education. What better tribute to our mothers and mother country than to help illiterate mothers and their children become well educated, independent and secure!
