What is the Readathon?
Pratham USA Readathon 2014 is a fundraising initiative that encourages kids in the U.S. to read more books and raise money to help less fortunate kids in India learn to read.
How does it work?
Kids ask their friends and family to donate money to Pratham for every book they read. The more books they read, the more money they raise. Learn more here.
Where does my money go?
All donations go to support Pratham’s work for child literacy in India. With the help of trained professionals and dedicated volunteers, Pratham runs pre-schools and after-school programs in many cities and villages of India so that underprivileged children can read, write and count at their appropriate grade level. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or other older siblings read to them, and count those books.
Why participate?
Reading is good for everyone. Reading to help others by participating in this Readathon is a great way to do community service, and enjoy the benefits of reading at the same time – increased vocabulary, improved communication skills and the joy of helping others.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Certificates of Appreciation go to all readers. Prizes will also be given to readers who raise $100, $250, $500, or more. A Young Reader Award will be given to the reader who raises the most money and a Young Leader Award will be given to the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of money.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
A Readathon Coordinator (RC) is a high school student who will lead a team of younger readers and guide, support, and cheer them on in meeting their reading and fundraising goals for the Readathon. A RC will learn good management and leadership skills, and can also enjoy all the benefits of being a reader. For more information, click here.
How do I know if my donation makes a difference?
With every $1,000 raised, Pratham will be able to educate 40 children for one whole year. Readers and donors will receive a story about a group of students helped through money they raised or donated in the Readathon. For reading some stories from last year, click here.

Every book I read helps educate a child in India

Dear Friends,

I am participating in Pratham USA Readathon 2014 because I want to help less fortunate children attend Pratham schools and learn to read, write and count well. Pratham is a not-for-profit organization that is educating millions of kids in India since it was founded in 1994. It is very well known and has won many international awards for its work in child literacy and education. Pratham USA raises funds and awareness in the US for this important cause. Please visit www.prathamusa.org for more information.

Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year. I love to read because when I read, I can learn a lot, meet new people, discover new places, find new ideas, improve my vocabulary, use my imagination and never get bored! I am so happy that with your donation, my reading will help many other children. I am going to read __25_ books during my summer break – before the end of August. Please support my Readathon by making a donation to Pratham USA today.

Love,
Smrithi

I did some more reading - update as of August 29 2014 (sent August 30)

Hello all – I read a few more books over the summer that I enjoyed. I hope to raise more money for this cause.

Classics

Three Musketeers – This book is about a young nobleman who teams up with three musketeers. Together they must stop the evil plans of their rival, the Cardinal and defend their king and queen.

Thriller/Horror

The Ghost of Greylock – I enjoyed this thriller about 4 kids going to an abandoned mental hospital where a ghost roams the halls.

Fantasy

The school of Good vs. Evil – There is a fairytale school where some kids get chosen to go to. The ones with a pure heart go to the school for good and the ones with a bad heart go to the school for evil. In the school for good, the people end up becoming princes or princesses in fairytales. In the school for evil, people end up becoming villains in fairytales. The different twists in the story is what made this book interesting.

A Tale Dark and Grimm – In this fairytale adventure, two siblings journey throughout different fairytales. They have to overcome many difficult tasks along the way. I found many of them to be gory.

Historical Fiction

A long walk to water – A young boy in Africa is shocked when a war starts right where he is. He journeys with a group of people from the same tribe as him. The journey is very long and he struggles along the way. This book was sad but the ending of the book is filled with surprises.

The lions of little rock – Two girls who are very different but couldn’t be more alike are torn apart when one of them turns out to be passing as white in their school.

Non-fiction

Who is Jane Goodall – Jane Goodall was a woman who found out way more about apes than we knew before. This information helped us learn a lot more about them.
