What is the Readathon?
Pratham USA Readathon 2014 is a fundraising initiative that encourages kids in the U.S. to read more books and raise money to help less fortunate kids in India learn to read.
How does it work?
Kids ask their friends and family to donate money to Pratham for every book they read. The more books they read, the more money they raise. Learn more here.
Where does my money go?
All donations go to support Pratham’s work for child literacy in India. With the help of trained professionals and dedicated volunteers, Pratham runs pre-schools and after-school programs in many cities and villages of India so that underprivileged children can read, write and count at their appropriate grade level. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or other older siblings read to them, and count those books.
Why participate?
Reading is good for everyone. Reading to help others by participating in this Readathon is a great way to do community service, and enjoy the benefits of reading at the same time – increased vocabulary, improved communication skills and the joy of helping others.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Certificates of Appreciation go to all readers. Prizes will also be given to readers who raise $100, $250, $500, or more. A Young Reader Award will be given to the reader who raises the most money and a Young Leader Award will be given to the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of money.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
A Readathon Coordinator (RC) is a high school student who will lead a team of younger readers and guide, support, and cheer them on in meeting their reading and fundraising goals for the Readathon. A RC will learn good management and leadership skills, and can also enjoy all the benefits of being a reader. For more information, click here.
How do I know if my donation makes a difference?
With every $1,000 raised, Pratham will be able to educate 40 children for one whole year. Readers and donors will receive a story about a group of students helped through money they raised or donated in the Readathon. For reading some stories from last year, click here.

I did some more reading - update as of August 29 2014

Hello all – I read a few more books over the summer that I enjoyed. I hope to raise more money for this cause.

Classics

Three Musketeers – This book is about a young nobleman who teams up with three musketeers. Together they must stop the evil plans of their rival, the Cardinal and defend their king and queen.

Thriller/Horror

The Ghost of Greylock – I enjoyed this thriller about 4 kids going to an abandoned mental hospital where a ghost roams the halls.

Fantasy

The school of Good vs. Evil – There is a fairytale school where some kids get chosen to go to. The ones with a pure heart go to the school for good and the ones with a bad heart go to the school for evil. In the school for good, the people end up becoming princes or princesses in fairytales. In the school for evil, people end up becoming villains in fairytales. The different twists in the story is what made this book interesting.

A Tale Dark and Grimm – In this fairytale adventure, two siblings journey throughout different fairytales. They have to overcome many difficult tasks along the way. I found many of them to be gory.

Historical Fiction

A long walk to water – A young boy in Africa is shocked when a war starts right where he is. He journeys with a group of people from the same tribe as him. The journey is very long and he struggles along the way. This book was sad but the ending of the book is filled with surprises.

The lions of little rock – Two girls who are very different but couldn’t be more alike are torn apart when one of them turns out to be passing as white in their school.

Non-fiction

Who is Jane Goodall – Jane Goodall was a woman who found out way more about apes than we knew before. This information helped us learn a lot more about them.

my reading log - as of July 11th

Thank you for all your support in donating to the cause for Pratham. Below are my book summaries from what I have read so far.

To kill a mockingbird

My dad wanted me to read this book because it was one of his favorites. This book looks at racism through the eyes of a little girl. She is very innocent and does not understand much about the complications going on around her. Her father, who was a lawyer, was involved in a case in which he supported and defended an African American man who was accused of a crime that he did not commit. Even though everyone knew he was telling the truth , he still got sent to prison just because he was colored. The children of the lawyer often got bullied and made fun of at school because their father did the right thing and supported African Americans. The lawyer’s little girl got into a lot of fights with the other kids because they always called her father bad names. Of course, she did not understand what those names meant. All she knew was that they were bad. Her older brother usually understood what her father had to go through and was moody most of the time because he wished that his family could be liked by a lot of people. Their family was very brave because they supported a colored man knowing that it would cause them trouble, but they did it anyway. You should always stand up for what you believe in because one day, you might actually get what you were fighting for.

One for the Murphy’s

A girl’s mom is in the hospital and so she gets sent to a foster home. In the foster home, she learns what love feels like and forms a tight bond with the mom in the foster home. The girl can’t choose which mother she would rather have.

“Who is Steve Jobs?”

I was thinking about the craze of iPads and iPhones going on lately and wanted to learn more about the genius who made this all happen. I learned much more about Steve Jobs that I did not know before. He started the company apple and also took part in making movies with Pixar. He was adopted and had an adopted sister. Steve had a short temper and was a little bit crazy. In the end, it was cancer that killed him. Without Steve Jobs we would have no Apple products. How insane would that be?! This book has inspired me to use my imagination to create things. I have to work my way up, not down.

“Who is J.K Rowling?”

Do you know a lot about the creator of our favorite wizard, Harry potter? J.K Rowling loved writing since she was a little girl. When she was all grown up, she had to take of her daughter by herself. She barely had any money and was practically broke. She needed a way to earn money, fast! Then she had an idea. Since she loved to write, she could just start writing books. She had an idea about a wizard boy named Harry potter. Each day she added more and more ideas to the book. J.K had to be patient because sometimes she just needed to start from scratch all over again. The first time she tried publishing the book, they did not let her. The next time, they allowed her to. Soon, Harry Potter became famous all over England. Kids in America were getting excited about it too. Today, everybody knows about Harry potter, but now I know a little bit about the author too.

Nancy Drew

For those of you that do not know about this series, it is about a female detective and her two best friends solving mysteries and uncovering all kinds of hidden clues. These books are really interesting and I am reading a bunch of them this summer. You cannot take your eyes off of them! If you like mystery books, you should read this series.
