Every book I read helps educate a child in India
Dear Friends,
I am participating in Pratham USA Readathon 2016 because I want to help less fortunate children attend schools and learn to read, write and count well. Pratham is a not-for-profit organization that is educating millions of kids in India since it was founded in 1995.
2016 Readathon will be my fifth year of participation. I look forward to putting in my effort to this Readathon every summer because it not only lures me to read and educate myself more, but this is also a way that I can help in my own way in encouraging the new generation of children in India to read too. India’s poverty causes the family money to be spent on the essentials to live, and not their children’s education. This is unfortunate as this takes away future opportunities for these children. I am lucky enough to have the opportunity and to experience having a great education. From this, I know that education is a critically essential. It opens the human mind to the endless ideas that can be created from your imagination. An education allows those ideas to be written in a type of permanent ink which changes our world and community for the better and help other people in need. Taking our privileges and sharing them with people in need, like the children in India. This is what Pratham believes in – and so do I!
Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one year. A whole year of education for one child can inspire that child to do great things in the world and making a difference just like it inspired me. I believe by participating in a Readathon emphasizes the impact of education because it encourages being curious and discovering new places. My goal this year is to support 20 children. Please support my Readathon by making a donation to Pratham USA today and help me reach (and beat!) my goal.
It will put a smile on my face and the child who’s life you improved my giving some money. It’s worth it – don’t you think?
Love,
Reva Agrawal
8/22/2016--TERRIBLE TYPHOID MARY (sent August 22)
Hello everyone!!
Today is 8/22/16, the last day before my summer comes to a close and a new school year begins. We have raised a total of $450 which will provide 18 children in India a year’s worth of education. With just 50 more dollars we will not only help 2 more children get an education but we would have also reached our goal of $500. With your help, these children in India can learn how to read instead of being illiterate like most of their population already is. They could understand the words on a page, a contract, or even a sign and enjoy doing it anytime of the year just like you or me.
I recently read a book called Terrible Typhoid Mary by Susan Campbell Bartoletti which revolved around the story of Mary Mallon, an Irish cook who was accused of infecting many people with typhoid fever. This non-fiction book showed me just how inaccurate medical theories were and just how much you could trust them. After I finished reading this book, I started reading Flowers for Algernon, a book which exposes me to a new topic. I hope to continue reading throughout the school year and more forward in the future.
