What is the Readathon?
The Readathon is a fundraising initiative done through Pratham that encourages kids in the U.S. to read more books and raise money to help less fortunate kids in India learn to read.
How does it work?
Kids ask their friends and family to sponsor them for a dollar amount for each book they read. The more books they read, the more money they raise.
Where does my money go?
All donations go to support Pratham’s Read India initiative, the premier program for teaching underprivileged Indian kids, aged 6-14, basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills. Pratham teams mobilize and train schoolteachers, Anganwadi workers and volunteers to work with children and their mothers outside school.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or other older siblings read to them, and count those books.
Why participate?
Kids will read more this summer, which helps them learn. Readers will learn the value of helping others and participating in community service.
Are there prizes?
Certificates of Appreciation go to all readers. Prizes are available for readers who raise $100, $250, $500, or more. A Youth Leader Award will be give to the Readathon Coordinator whose team raises the most money.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
Readathon Coordinators (RCs) are high school students who volunteer to lead younger teams of readers and guide, support, and cheer them on. RC’s learn good leadership skills, and their experience will look great on a resume or college application.
How do I know my donation will make a difference?
With every $500 raised, 34 kids in India will be helped through the Pratham Read India program. All donors will receive a story about a group of students helped through money raised in the Readathon.

100% of all donations will go directly to Pratham USA. SeeYourImpact.org even covers credit card fees to save money for Pratham. When you make a donation, you have the option to give an additional gift to SeeYourImpact to help cover their operating expenses.

Hey! My name is Kahrej Ahluwalia and I currently live in Plano, Texas (a suburb of Dallas). I am 13 years old. I LOVE to play basketball, hang out with friends, and MOST importantly- read! Reading is a good way to pass time AND educate yourself by filling yourself up with vocabulary :). I am a member of the Pratham DFW Chapter Kids Club.

Pratham is a non-profit charity organization which raises money to help the poor children in India get an education instead of kids, my age, working in fields. This Read-a-thon is to raise money by gaining sponsors (you) to donate any amount of money according to how many books I read over the summer time or you can just donate money. EVERY PENNY COUNTS :). 100% of the donations go to the poor kids in India who need an education. I believe that we and the kids in India are equals. The only difference between us and them is where we are born.

Recently, I visited a few Pratham learning centers in India. I realized that they were way more thankful than any person I (and im sure you) know. They were studying with passion and acknowledged every single thing the teacher told them. They had one fan in the tight-spaced room. The power goes out frequently there. The 8-14 year old group of kids were sweating heavily, but remained focused. To me, thats unbelievable! We take AC for granted and many of us complain about how school sucks. While the students were studying basic math, my brothers and I sat with them and began conversations. We gave them an overview on what Pratham is doing to help them. I noticed each and every little face light up. We informed them about how children, like me, are reading and setting up projects to help them read, write, and learn basic math. I believe our visit influenced them to not drop out of school and to study even harder as now they know that people actually care and think about them. I also believe it influenced me greatly because now i know to not take everything for granted. All i can say about these groups of students is that they are deserving, thankful, kind, and appreciative kids.

So far i have read the following books:

Harry Potter: And the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling, published 2000- the fourth book of the Harry Potter series

The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, published 1937- the prequal book to the Lord of the Rings series

I am currently reading:

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins, published 2009- the second book of the Hunger Games series
