What is the Readathon?
Pratham USA Readathon 2016 is a fundraising initiative that encourages kids in the U.S. to read books and raise money to help underprivileged kids in India learn to read, write and count.
How does it work?
With a parent’s help, kids ask their friends and family to donate money to Pratham for every book they read. The more books they read and the more people they ask, the more money they raise.
Where does my money go?
All donations to the Readathon go to support Pratham’s work for child education in India. With the help of trained professionals and dedicated volunteers, Pratham runs pre-schools and after-school programs in many cities and villages of India so that underprivileged children can read, write and count at their appropriate grade level. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or older siblings read to them.
Why participate?
Reading is good for everyone. Reading to help others learn to read is Great! Participating in this Readathon is an amazing way to do community service and enjoy the benefits of reading at the same time – expanded vocabulary, improved communication skills and increased knowledge.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Medals and Trophies for readers who raise more money so that more kids are helped. A Young Reader Award for the reader who raises the most money and a Young Leader Award for the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of money. Certificates of Appreciation for all readers.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
A Readathon Coordinator (RC) is a high school student who leads a team of younger readers and guides, supports and cheers them on in meeting their reading and fundraising goals for the Readathon. An RC will learn good management and leadership skills and can also enjoy all the benefits of being a reader. Volunteering experience as RC may be used to fulfill honor society requirements or to build up the resume.
How do I know if my donation makes a difference?
In addition to various impact stories you can read here some participating families have also visited Pratham programs in India to see the impact with their own eyes. You can contact us if you want to plan a visit to a Pratham site or have specific questions. In addition, Pratham is a four star rated charity (highest possible rating) by the Charity Navigator.

June 2016 update(Update #2)

Hello! So far I have read 5 more great books this summer!

The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells- This tells the story of mad scientist who arrives in a small town called Bramblehurst. The townsfolk get suspicious of him quickly, and rightfully so. It turns out he is driving himself crazy trying to find the formula for invisibility. This suspense-filled novel will keep you reading through the entire book.

Me & Jack by Danette Haworth- This great novel is about a boy named Joshua who has trouble fitting in as “the new kid.” But, he finds a new dog that just connects with him and they grow attached to each other. He’s not very popular due to his dad being in the military during the time of a controversial war, the Vietnam War. So, when accusations are made against his dog, he will have to defend Jack( his dog), himself, and his entire family. Read this phenomenal page-turner to discover this great story.

Hawaii Island legends by Mary Pukui- This book has a variety of interesting stories that incorporate Hawaiian culture. There are stories of gods, godesses, chiefs, and people with superhuman abilities. Read this book to see all of these fascinating stories.

Todhunter Moon, Book One: Pathfinder by Angie Sage-This book is truly a great start to the sequel series of the great Septimus Heap series. It tells the story of a great adventure, where a young PathFinder named Tod Hunter Moon goes to save her family from Darke( dark in the Septimus Heap Universe) sorcerers. To do this she must truly find her own Magyk( a special type of magic in the Septimus Heap Universe) and embrace herself as a PathFinder. Read this riveting novel to see this epic plot play out.

Update #1 6/6/2016

Hello! As of today I have read 2 brilliant books by two great authors. The first book is called The Garden of Eve by K.L. Going which is about a girl named Evie and her father who move into a mysterious new town called Beaumont, where Evie’s father buys an orchard which is believed by many to be cursed. Before long, Evie sees things that could only be possible by magic, such as a boy that the village believes is dead. Evie soon finds herself in a real live fairy tale, just as her mom had told her before she died. Will it turn out the way she wanted? Find out by reading the Garden of Eve. The second book I have read is called Surrounded by Sharks by Michael Northrop. This book is about a boy named Davey who goes vacationing in Florida. One day he decided to take a swim, but before he knew it he was pulled in to the ocean by the strong current and was then, surrounded by sharks. Will Davey ever make it out? Peruse this great novel to find out. I hope you will love these books and don’t forget to donate!
