What is the Readathon?
Pratham USA Readathon 2016 is a fundraising initiative that encourages kids in the U.S. to read books and raise money to help underprivileged kids in India learn to read, write and count.
How does it work?
With a parent’s help, kids ask their friends and family to donate money to Pratham for every book they read. The more books they read and the more people they ask, the more money they raise.
Where does my money go?
All donations to the Readathon go to support Pratham’s work for child education in India. With the help of trained professionals and dedicated volunteers, Pratham runs pre-schools and after-school programs in many cities and villages of India so that underprivileged children can read, write and count at their appropriate grade level. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or older siblings read to them.
Why participate?
Reading is good for everyone. Reading to help others learn to read is Great! Participating in this Readathon is an amazing way to do community service and enjoy the benefits of reading at the same time – expanded vocabulary, improved communication skills and increased knowledge.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Medals and Trophies for readers who raise more money so that more kids are helped. A Young Reader Award for the reader who raises the most money and a Young Leader Award for the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of money. Certificates of Appreciation for all readers.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
A Readathon Coordinator (RC) is a high school student who leads a team of younger readers and guides, supports and cheers them on in meeting their reading and fundraising goals for the Readathon. An RC will learn good management and leadership skills and can also enjoy all the benefits of being a reader. Volunteering experience as RC may be used to fulfill honor society requirements or to build up the resume.
How do I know if my donation makes a difference?
In addition to various impact stories you can read here some participating families have also visited Pratham programs in India to see the impact with their own eyes. You can contact us if you want to plan a visit to a Pratham site or have specific questions. In addition, Pratham is a four star rated charity (highest possible rating) by the Charity Navigator.

Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew: A Musical Mess by Carolyn Keene

This was a great book. There was a girl named Nancy Drew who went to the play Francie with her friends. There was a dog in the play named Sammy who messed up the play. Then they figured out that the dog wasn’t the actual Sammy. Nancy and her friends tried to figure out who was the actual dog. They found out pretty soon that the real Sammy was replaced by a dog named Knuckles who was owned by a girl named Shelby. Shelby returned Sammy and Francie was in the theaters again!

Holly the Christmas Fairy by Daisy Meadows

This book was amazing. There were 2 girls named Rachel and Kirsty who had to save Santa’s sleigh and the presents that were stolen by Jack Frost and his nasty goblins. They had a little fairy named Holly to help them save Christmas. They had to face goblins at different places like the shopping mall, a barn and Jack Frost’s ice castle.

Sofia learns a lesson

In this book there was a girl named Sofia and she was going to sing the anthem at a ceremony. She is really happy and is getting lots of gifts and she brags about this to her friends. But when she tries to speak, she starts croaking like a frog. She wonders why and figures out that her amulet had cursed her because she had bragged to her friends. To make up for it (she had a little help from Belle),Sofia invites her friends to sing the anthem with her on the stage and now she stops croaking!

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss

This was a great book.It showed a boy named Sam-I-am give a food called green eggs and ham but the other boy did not want green eggs and ham.Sam-I-am kept on asking him to try green eggs and ham. But he would not. Then they both got stuck in a boat and went into the water. When they got out of the water he tried the food and said it was good. Now he will eat it everywhere!

Silverlicious by Victoria Kann

In this book, a girl named Pinkalicious lost her sweet tooth and couldn’t wait for the tooth fairy, Tootheetina, to come visit her. But when other people came instead of Tootheetina, Pinkalicious wasn’t kind to them. She didn’t like the candy that they gave her because she lost her sweet tooth. When Tootheetina came, she said she had to be sweet to everyone to get her sweet tooth back. And she did!

Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish

In this book, there was a girl named Amelia Bedelia and some folks named Mr. Rogers and Mrs. Rogers who gave her a list of things to do. However, she didn’t understand the tasks. For example, when she had to draw the drapes, she drew the drapes on paper instead of closing them. She made a lemon-meringue pie as a surprise for the folks. When the folks got home, they were very angry at her for messing up the tasks. But when they tasted the pie, they were very pleased. In the end, no one cared about the tasks anymore, only the lemon-meringue pie!
