What is the Readathon?
Pratham USA Readathon 2016 is a fundraising initiative that encourages kids in the U.S. to read books and raise money to help underprivileged kids in India learn to read, write and count.
How does it work?
With a parent’s help, kids ask their friends and family to donate money to Pratham for every book they read. The more books they read and the more people they ask, the more money they raise.
Where does my money go?
All donations to the Readathon go to support Pratham’s work for child education in India. With the help of trained professionals and dedicated volunteers, Pratham runs pre-schools and after-school programs in many cities and villages of India so that underprivileged children can read, write and count at their appropriate grade level. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or older siblings read to them.
Why participate?
Reading is good for everyone. Reading to help others learn to read is Great! Participating in this Readathon is an amazing way to do community service and enjoy the benefits of reading at the same time – expanded vocabulary, improved communication skills and increased knowledge.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Medals and Trophies for readers who raise more money so that more kids are helped. A Young Reader Award for the reader who raises the most money and a Young Leader Award for the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of money. Certificates of Appreciation for all readers.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
A Readathon Coordinator (RC) is a high school student who leads a team of younger readers and guides, supports and cheers them on in meeting their reading and fundraising goals for the Readathon. An RC will learn good management and leadership skills and can also enjoy all the benefits of being a reader. Volunteering experience as RC may be used to fulfill honor society requirements or to build up the resume.
How do I know if my donation makes a difference?
In addition to various impact stories you can read here some participating families have also visited Pratham programs in India to see the impact with their own eyes. You can contact us if you want to plan a visit to a Pratham site or have specific questions. In addition, Pratham is a four star rated charity (highest possible rating) by the Charity Navigator.

The Fault in Our Stars

This is a brilliant novel written by John Green. In fact, I believe that this is the best book I’ve read during this fundraiser. It is written in the point of view of Hazel. Hazel was diagnosed with cancer at 13 and after 3 years is cured but still visited the hospital regularly. She becomes very gloom and her mother recommends a Support Group consisting of children who are also Cancer survivors. At the support group she meets Augustus Waters, a young and charming boy. Hazel and Augustus become very close and go to Amsterdam. There they discover true love and enjoy their vacation. But soon after they come back, a tragedy strikes that leaves everyone in tears. Read this book to reveal what happens. I highly recommend this book for middle and high school readers.

The Secrets We Keep

This novel demonstrates the relationship between a pair of twins. But, twin sisters Maddie and Elie couldn’t be more different. Maddie is popular, while Elie is a quiet, insecure sophomore. And therefore they believed they didn’t need each other. But one day, Maddie and Elie get into a car crash and one of them dies. Everyone believes that Maddie is the one who lives but it is actually Elie. Elie pretends to be Maddie because she thinks that it would satisfy everyone. But then realizes how difficult it is since Maddie had several secrets. Elie must decide if she will continue this skit or live her life. This is a very interesting book that i would recommend for readers in middle and high school.

This is book was a mystical, thriller that described the story of a high school girl, Maddie. Maddie was born with a special gift, when she looks at someone she sees their death date floating above their forehead. Therefore, Maddie and her mom set up a home business where clients come and ask for their death date. And as usual a mother comes in and asks for her child’s death day, and Maddie franticly states that it is a week away! And unfortunately the mother doesn’t believe her. But like Maddie said the child disappears the next week. The police believe that Maddie committed this accident and convict her of crime. Now Maddie must escape this tragedy and convince the police that it wasn’t her. Find out what happens to Maddie by reading this book. I recommend this novel for 7th and 8th graders since the plot is very frantic.
