What is the Readathon?
Pratham USA Readathon 2016 is a fundraising initiative that encourages kids in the U.S. to read books and raise money to help underprivileged kids in India learn to read, write and count.
How does it work?
With a parent’s help, kids ask their friends and family to donate money to Pratham for every book they read. The more books they read and the more people they ask, the more money they raise.
Where does my money go?
All donations to the Readathon go to support Pratham’s work for child education in India. With the help of trained professionals and dedicated volunteers, Pratham runs pre-schools and after-school programs in many cities and villages of India so that underprivileged children can read, write and count at their appropriate grade level. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or older siblings read to them.
Why participate?
Reading is good for everyone. Reading to help others learn to read is Great! Participating in this Readathon is an amazing way to do community service and enjoy the benefits of reading at the same time – expanded vocabulary, improved communication skills and increased knowledge.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Medals and Trophies for readers who raise more money so that more kids are helped. A Young Reader Award for the reader who raises the most money and a Young Leader Award for the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of money. Certificates of Appreciation for all readers.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
A Readathon Coordinator (RC) is a high school student who leads a team of younger readers and guides, supports and cheers them on in meeting their reading and fundraising goals for the Readathon. An RC will learn good management and leadership skills and can also enjoy all the benefits of being a reader. Volunteering experience as RC may be used to fulfill honor society requirements or to build up the resume.
How do I know if my donation makes a difference?
In addition to various impact stories you can read here some participating families have also visited Pratham programs in India to see the impact with their own eyes. You can contact us if you want to plan a visit to a Pratham site or have specific questions. In addition, Pratham is a four star rated charity (highest possible rating) by the Charity Navigator.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'engle

One night, a strange visitor comes to the Murry house and beckons a girl named Meg, her brother Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin to go on a dangerous and extraordinary quest to help find their father. As they discover the reality of the universe and the 4th dimension, Meg-along with her companions-figures out many truths and secrets of their parents and some of her talented but sort of different brother.

Beswitched by Kate Saunders

This was a really good book that expressed friendship and kindness. A girl named Flora Fox is unwillingly forced to go to a boarding school named Penrice Hall because of a family emergency. But after she wakes up from a nap on the train to the school, she realizes that she is transported into the past in 1935. Instead of Penrice Hall, she goes to St. Winfried’s, where she has to where ugly clothes, deal with an extremely mean teacher and a bully, and survive without any electronics. Her 3 roommates, who are responsible for the transportation, help Flora get through the term. There are many surprises and adventures along the book, as well as mysteries.

Jake and Lily by Jerry Spinelli

This was a really good book in showing the life of twins. In this book, there are 2 twins named Jake and Lily who are pretty much opposites except for the fact that they both sleepwalk to the train station in the middle of the night on their birthday and they can communicate with each other without words. But, this year Jake hangs out with a pack of boys and starts to ignore Lily completely. Meanwhile, Lily is trying to make friends and find a life apart from her twin. This book expressed love, friendship, anger, and a lot more emotions between siblings.

Twist My Charm: The Popularity Spell by Toni Gallagher

This was a really great book that expresses friendship, love, generosity, and a little magic. When a girl named Cleo receives a voodoo doll complete with instructions to make wonderful surprises as a birthday present from her uncle Arnie, she and her friend Samantha start wishing for treats. They start with small wishes (like pizza), but they get bigger soon. Eventually, they accidentally get the most popular girl in school in trouble and make Cleo’s dad unhappy. The doll is guaranteed to change their lives!

The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann

This is an amazing adventure book. In the land of Quill, where creativity is unacceptable, children are divided into 3 groups, the Wanteds, Necessaries, and Unwanteds. Alexander Stowe, an Unwanted, is taken to the Great Lake of Boiling Oil to face death along with the other Unwanteds. But when the Unwanteds are taken to the lake, the lake magically turns into a land called Artime which is led by a magician named Mr. Today. In Artime, life is based on creativity, which is considered a gift and a weapon. This land changes Alex’s life along with all the others.

Rules by Cynthia Lord

Rules was a really good book to read. A twelve-year old girl named Catherine wants a normal life, which isn’t easy if you have a brother with autism who has embarrassing habits. But this summer, Catherine meets a next-door friend named Kristi and a new, surprising friend named Jason. These people all changed her life in good and bad ways and Catherine finds herself wondering if anyone can ever have a normal life.

Penny from Heaven by Jennifer L. Holm

Penny from Heaven is a funny, exciting, and somewhat sad book.It is about a girl who has to put up with the two sides of her family that don’t get along with each other. During the story she has to put up with many difficulties, such as a serious wringer injury to her arm and her mother dating the milkman. In the end, she ends up learning that things can still work out, even when you feel that everything is going wrong.

Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan

Riding Freedom was a really detailed and lifelike book. It is about a girl named Charlotte Parkhurst who ran away from an orphanage for boys in the mid-1800s. She disguised herself as a young man so nobody would recognize her. She had a talent for riding horses and turned out to be an amazing stagecoach as well as the first woman to ever vote in the U.S. Charlotte rode horses to achieve her dream, which was to own a ranch with foals and apple trees and a sign that says private property. This was a great book in showing how there should be the same freedom for men and women.

Wonder by R.J.Palacio

Wonder was one of the best books I ever read. It shows how a boy with a physical disability got through fifth grade(the first grade he’s ever been in) while gaining some friends and dealing with many tough times along the way. This book shows the importance of friendship and family through different points of view. Wonder shows that your physical appearance doesn’t have to do with what you can achieve.

The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau

The City of Ember is a wonderful book to read for all ages. The city named Ember is running out of supplies, has frequent blackouts, and is falling apart. When a girl named Lina Mayfleet works as a messenger and a boy named Doon Harrow works as a Pipeworks laborer, who is an underground worker, they work together to find out that the city is falling apart because of the greedy mayor. With some help from a chewed up piece of paper, they find a way out of Ember and into a strange but beautiful place. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and a little bit of suspense. I had a lot of fun reading this book and I hope you do too!!!
