What is the Readathon?
Pratham USA Readathon 2013 is a fundraising initiative that encourages kids in the U.S. to read more books and raise money to help less fortunate kids in India learn to read.
How does it work?
Kids ask their friends and family to donate money to Pratham for every book they read. The more books they read, the more money they raise.
Where does my money go?
All donations go to support Pratham’s work for child literacy in India. With the help of trained professionals and dedicated volunteers, Pratham runs pre-schools and after-school programs in many cities and villages of India so that underprivileged children can read, write and count at their appropriate grade level. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or other older siblings read to them, and count those books.
Why participate?
Reading is good for everyone. Reading to help others by participating in this Readathon is a great way to do community service, and enjoy the benefits of reading at the same time – increased vocabulary, improved communication skills and the joy of helping others.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Certificates of Appreciation go to all readers. Prizes will also be given to readers who raise $100, $250, $500, or more. A Young Reader Award will be given to the reader who raises the most money and a Young Leader Award will be given to the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of money.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
A Readathon Coordinator (RC) is a high school student who will lead a team of younger readers and guide, support, and cheer them on in meeting their reading and fundraising goals for the Readathon. A RC will learn good management and leadership skills, and can also enjoy all the benefits of being a reader. For more information, click here.
How do I know if my donation makes a difference?
With every $1,000 raised, Pratham will be able to educate 40 children for one whole year. Readers and donors will receive a story about a group of students helped through money they raised or donated in the Readathon. For reading some stories from last year, click here.

How not to babysit your brother

This is a book I did not relate to. It is about a boy named Will who has to babysit his little brother Steve as their mother is out and their grandma has fallen asleep. Steve does all sorts of wild and crazy things.

I don’t think my baby brother is like that at all. He is really sweet and does not do any of the things like Steve does.

So I did not enjoy this book too much, although some parts were funny.

Hungry Plants

Last night, I read a book about plants that eat insects!! I always thought it was the other way around and it was a big surprise to me that there are actually some plants that eat insects.
It seems that the places where they grow are not very soil rich and hence they need to do this to survive.
Some of the plants are the Venus fly trap, the pitcher plant and Bladderwort. It was fascinating to read how they trap the insects.

My mother told me that when she was in school, she had made some insect eating plant models for her science project. She even showed me some pictures of it.

My Secret Bully

I read this book last night. It was a very good book. It is about a girl named Monica, who is around 10 years old. She used to have a friend called Katie since kindergarten, but suddenly Katie starts talking ill of Monica to all the other girls. Monica is very confused as to why she is behaving this way.
Katie turns so bad, that Monica suffers from stomach pains and hates going to school.
Then Monica’s mom comes up with a great solution. She tells Monica to stand up for herself and let Katie know that real friends do not treat each other this way. At the end of this book, Monica and Katie are not longer friends and Monica makes new friends.

My mother has always told me to stand up for myself and not to do anything I am not comfortable doing. She always tells me to speak up my mind and not be afraid that others might not like me because of it.

Amelia Bedelia

I love Amelia Bedelia books! She is so funny and takes everything literally. My mother explained to me about this. In this book, she wants a new bike as her friend from school has a fancy brand new bike. So she does all sorts of odd jobs to collect money for her bike. When I grow big, I want to earn money and gift my mother an electric car!
She gets into all sorts of trouble and at the end the mayor presents her a new bike for all her sincere efforts. I read this book in 2 days, although it was a big book. I loved it.
In one part of the book, she is working in a pie shop and the owner says “Get a piece of pie and step on it”!! Amelia being Amelia goes to the counter, gets the pie and stomps on it with her feet. That part was so funny! I laughed out loud.
I plan to borrow some books from the library with Amelia Bedeila on them as I have seen they have lots of it.

Magic Treehouse

I just finished reading Magic Treehouse book #48. I really loved the riddle Jack and Annie had to solve.
The riddle is, it is a food that is as tough as wood and the color of sand. It is backed with love, and given to those who lost their land.
We later found out that this food is “panda bread”.
I also learnt that the pandas are threatened with extinction (a new word I learnt! ) and if we want them to be around, we need to care for them.
It was very exciting toward the end when Jack and Annie rescue the pandas.
I loved this book very much!

Magic Treehouse

The second book I am currently reading is Book #48, “A Perfect Time for Pandas” in the Magic Treehouse series. I love all the magic tree house books and I have read most of them. I had received this one as a gift on my birthday, but had not read it until now.

Jack and Annie have to find a certain kind of food–the fourth thing needed to save Merlin’s beloved penguin, Penny. I have a feeling they will be traveling to China to solve this mystery. This is a big book, so I will post my next update once I finish reading it, which will be in about 4-5 days.

Thank you again everybody!
