What is the Readathon?
Pratham USA Readathon 2014 is a fundraising initiative that encourages kids in the U.S. to read more books and raise money to help less fortunate kids in India learn to read.
How does it work?
Kids ask their friends and family to donate money to Pratham for every book they read. The more books they read, the more money they raise. Learn more here.
Where does my money go?
All donations go to support Pratham’s work for child literacy in India. With the help of trained professionals and dedicated volunteers, Pratham runs pre-schools and after-school programs in many cities and villages of India so that underprivileged children can read, write and count at their appropriate grade level. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or other older siblings read to them, and count those books.
Why participate?
Reading is good for everyone. Reading to help others by participating in this Readathon is a great way to do community service, and enjoy the benefits of reading at the same time – increased vocabulary, improved communication skills and the joy of helping others.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Certificates of Appreciation go to all readers. Prizes will also be given to readers who raise $100, $250, $500, or more. A Young Reader Award will be given to the reader who raises the most money and a Young Leader Award will be given to the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of money.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
A Readathon Coordinator (RC) is a high school student who will lead a team of younger readers and guide, support, and cheer them on in meeting their reading and fundraising goals for the Readathon. A RC will learn good management and leadership skills, and can also enjoy all the benefits of being a reader. For more information, click here.
How do I know if my donation makes a difference?
With every $1,000 raised, Pratham will be able to educate 40 children for one whole year. Readers and donors will receive a story about a group of students helped through money they raised or donated in the Readathon. For reading some stories from last year, click here.

Summer vacation and current reading list

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for continuing to support our readathon. We went on a vacation to California. We enjoyed our time in California. We did some amazing camps like camp shoreline where learned to kayaking, canoeing and sail boating. We also did a shark camp where we got to go whale watching and pet some sharks. We enjoyed spending time with our friends.

Since the drive was so long we got to read some books on the drive. Here are some summaries of some of the books we read.

Heroes of the Mahabharata (Amar Chitra Katha): Heroes of the Mahabharata is a book that tells stories about bravery and intelligence. I learned a lot about Drona, Arjun, Krishna and Bheeshma. I liked all of them and found it very interesting.

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate Dcamillo
This book is about a girl who recently moved and has no friends. She finds a dog wrecking everything at the grocery store. She takes the dog home and becomes friends with the dog. Because of the dog she makes friends and is happy.

Penelope Crumb: Is a book about a girl who has big nose that she inherits from her grandpa. She goes to find her grandpa.

Currently we are reading Kashmiri Story teller by Ruskin Bond

Our reading achievments for June and our plans for July

Hi Everyone,

We recently went to attend our Summer Nationals at Columbus OH. Since the flights were long we had a chance to read a lot. Here is the list of books we read:

Ranthambore Adventure by Deepak Daalal
Its a book about Tigers and how they are poached. The story is set in Ranthambore national forest, Rajasthan, India. We loved that it was an adventure but has lots of information about Tigers.

Rag, Tag and Bobtail by Enid Blyton
Rag, Tag and Bobtail is a story about three pixies who are very naughty and always fight. I liked the book because it was very funny and it made me laugh a lot.

Goodnight Stories by Enid Blyton
This book was a compilation of many short stories. I liked the book because all the stories teach you a lesson and the characters were very different from each other.

The tale of Despearaux
The tale of Despearaux is about a mouse who was born early, was much smaller and had very large ears. He was very different from other mice. The story is about he lived rescued the princesses who was tricked and sent to the dungeon.

We will continue to read more books and send all of you an update.

Thanks for your donations and supporting such a great cause.

Thanks
Mallika and Ketki
