A Much-Needed Hernia Repair

Hector is a 57 year-old man living in the rural community of Las Aguas near the city of Monte Cristi in the Dominican Republic. These traditional communities — known in the D.R. as bateys — are some of the most traditionally impoverished areas in country. In the bateys of Monte Cristi, both low-income Dominicans and Haitian migrants — many of whom have crossed the border in search of employment — have little to no access to the critical healthcare services they need.

Hector was first seen by one of Timmy’s volunteer physicians during a medical trip to his community in January 2013. After presenting signs of a possible hernia, Timmy’s doctors referred him to our local partner hospital. Throughout the next few months, Timmy helped to ensure that Hector was able to have a consult with a surgeon. We also helped to finance critical lab work, a thorax x-ray, and a cardiovascular exam. By late fall Hector was able to undergo a much-needed hernia repair surgery, and today, thanks to your incredible support, he is thriving! He’s back to work and is finally able to help support his family again. Your donations made it possible. Thank you for helping to provide the care that has changed his life.
