What is Dyslexic All Day?
Summit Academy is redefining school options for dyslexic learners. Typically, dyslexic students are successful in schools that specialize only in remediation. Summit Academy ventures to embody remediation while providing expeditionary learning that is: active, challenging, meaningful, public, and collaborative for both dyslexic and traditional learners.
What is Expeditionary Learning (EL)?
Expeditionary Learning schools inspire the motivation to learn, engage teachers, and students in new levels of focus and effort, and transform schools into places where students and adults become leaders of their own learning. This model is ideal for the dyslexic mind.
Who is Summit Expeditionary Academy?
At Summit, teachers talk less and students talk more. We believe the most important people we can influence are in the next generation. Our kids are critical thinkers who investigate deeply and are excited about it. www.summit-ed.org

What is your dyslexic story?

Dear Friends and Family,

I am passionate about the new Dyslexic All Day pilot program at Summit Expeditionary Academy. If you only have 3 minutes the video above will inspire you as well.

This is my story: Georgia has always loved stories, numbers, art and loves building her vocabulary, so I was so surprised when she would get so frustrated when we worked on learning to read. Initially I thought it was just the dynamic between the two of us, that she didn’t like it when I played the role as teacher. However, that didn’t change once school started. My dynamic little girl with the sparkle that lights a room started retreating and was feeling embarrassed that the other kids in her class ‘all knew how to read already’. We were perplexed because we knew that SHE knew her letters and all of the sounds that they made. She just couldn’t get the sounds to string together to create words. It didn’t fit what WE knew dyslexia to be. We’ve learned that each form is different, that the letters don’t need to jumble to be dyslexic. We learned that phonetics confuse her. At first I was sad, not because of the dyslexia but because she wanted-she WANTS to read, she WANTS to learn and she’s motivated to do so. Now that we know the why, we can focus on the how and celebrate the fact that her brain learns differently. What is your story?

Dyslexic All Day recognizes a basic truth; that dyslexic learners are not just dyslexic when they read and write, but are dyslexic all day long. This program is not just about remediation – is is about teaching to the strengths of the dyslexic mind and creating a paradigm shift in how educational programs can embrace dyslexic learners. Successful implementation of this pilot program will allow for us to broaden our scope of impact to include educators and students at a global level.

I am writing to ask for your help to launch this pilot program – an ambitious goal of raising $24,000 in 24 days. No amount is too small. We will keep you updated and inspired for a short 24 Days (Sept. ? – Oct. ? ) while we launch this fundraising initiative.

Please share YOUR dyslexic story here: www.facebook.com/dyslexicallday. Please feel the passion and donate.

With Gratitude,
