Every book I read helps educate a child in India
Hello Friends,
My name is Ravi.
When I was 12 years old, I made a promise to myself to help less fortunate children. Soon after that, I visited India. I went to the Sivanandana Ashram in Chennai. These children had been orphaned or abandoned. There were a few hundred kids who would live and go to school on the Sivanandana campus. I spent my days teaching some of their classes. I taught them various English words, not necessarily to educate them but to connect with them. On my last day, I asked them all to come up to the chalk board and write what they wanted to be when they grow up. We had astronauts, doctors, engineers, authors, poets, cooks, musicians, mathematicians, lawyers, police officers, cricket players, and even a future president among us. These children, who came from broken backgrounds have hopes and dreams that we can help them achieve.
A couple of years ago, I got involved with Pratham. I visited some of the after school tutoring programs in New Delhi. Pratham does an amazing job educating and taking care of the less fortunate children who want an education. I saw children learning math, English, computer skills, and playing games. The time and money we spend to help these children makes a huge impact on children. However, half of India’s 210 million children are still illiterate. We have the power to help change that. Please join me in the Pratham Readathon so that we can make a difference to these children who want an education. If we can help provide opportunities for them, the possibilities are endless.
I am reading A Tale Of Two Cities by Charles Dickens and Divergent by Veronica Roth for the Readathon. Please sponsor my reading so that we can educate illiterate children.
I am participating in Pratham Readathon 2013 because I want to help less fortunate children attend Pratham schools and learn to read, write and count well. Pratham is a not-for-profit organization that is educating millions of kids in India since it was founded in1994. It is very well known and has won many international awards for its work in child literacy and education. Pratham USA raises funds and awareness in the US for this cause. Please visit www.prathamusa.org for more information.
Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year. I love to read because when I read, I can learn a lot, meet new people, discover new places, find new ideas, improve my vocabulary, and use my imagination. I am so happy that with your donation, my reading will help many other children. I am going to read 3 books. Please support me and make a donation to Pratham USA today.
