What is the Readathon?
Pratham USA Readathon 2014 is a fundraising initiative that encourages kids in the U.S. to read more books and raise money to help less fortunate kids in India learn to read.
How does it work?
Kids ask their friends and family to donate money to Pratham for every book they read. The more books they read, the more money they raise. Learn more here.
Where does my money go?
All donations go to support Pratham’s work for child literacy in India. With the help of trained professionals and dedicated volunteers, Pratham runs pre-schools and after-school programs in many cities and villages of India so that underprivileged children can read, write and count at their appropriate grade level. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or other older siblings read to them, and count those books.
Why participate?
Reading is good for everyone. Reading to help others by participating in this Readathon is a great way to do community service, and enjoy the benefits of reading at the same time – increased vocabulary, improved communication skills and the joy of helping others.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Certificates of Appreciation go to all readers. Prizes will also be given to readers who raise $100, $250, $500, or more. A Young Reader Award will be given to the reader who raises the most money and a Young Leader Award will be given to the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of money.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
A Readathon Coordinator (RC) is a high school student who will lead a team of younger readers and guide, support, and cheer them on in meeting their reading and fundraising goals for the Readathon. A RC will learn good management and leadership skills, and can also enjoy all the benefits of being a reader. For more information, click here.
How do I know if my donation makes a difference?
With every $1,000 raised, Pratham will be able to educate 40 children for one whole year. Readers and donors will receive a story about a group of students helped through money they raised or donated in the Readathon. For reading some stories from last year, click here.

Every book I read helps educate a child in India

Dear Friends,

I am participating in Pratham USA Readathon 2014 because I want to help poor children in India to learn to read, write and count well.

Pratham is a not-for-profit organization that is educating millions of kids in India since it was founded in 1994. It is very well known and has won many international awards for its work in child literacy and education. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year. Pratham USA raises funds and awareness in the US for this important cause. Please visit www.prathamusa.org for more information.

I love to read because when I read, I can learn a lot, discover new things, find new ideas, improve my vocabulary, use my imagination and never get bored! I am so happy that with your donation, my reading will help many other children. I am going to read _30__ books.

Please support my Readathon by making a donation to Pratham USA today.

Love,
Nandini.

Ramona – The Ramona Collection, Vol. 1: Beezus and Ramona / Ramona the Pest / Ramona the Brave / Ramona and Her Father

I read these so long ago and wanted to read them again. I like Ramano because she is so naughty, just like me. I like to paint my walls, decorate them with my art work, collect treasures in my socks, talk about all my doll collection with friends at school. But my mom does not like some of them. I have to keep reminding her that I like doing those and that is why I never ever listen to her. I like to pretend that I am Beezus and that my little sister is Ramona. I am just kidding. My little sister is only 1, she needs to wait for 4 more years to become Ramona. But she does annoy me sometimes, like Ramona does to Beezus. She tears up all by books and scribbles on them. I love my books and I get in trouble with my mom every time she tears my books. But I love her. Just like Beezus and Ramona, we are very very close. She follows me around all the time and I love her more when she hugs me. She is my favorite person in the entire world. Last night in bed she tried to repeat after me, like ‘Blue car’, ‘ Not that’, ‘It is mine’. It is funny how she tries to tell ‘red car’, it sounds like ‘yet caa’. I am waiting for my sister to grow up and be Ramona.

2. Space Encyclopedia: (National Geographic Kids)

I love reading about Space and Planets. I keep wondering about the first man on this planet. He would not have had any friends because he was the only one on this planet. In PBS Kids, I once saw how Planets were made and why they orbit around the sun. Long ago, even before the dinosaurs, Planets were just going around and hitting each other so hard and that is why the Earth, Mars have craters in them. Uranus orbits on its side because some planet hit it so hard, it fell on its side. I though it was very very funny that Uranus rolls on its sides. And Mars is all red. Pluto is a dwarf planet and Earth is the blue planet. If you put something in Neptune, it will come out the other side because Neptune is made of only gas. The other day, I though I saw Mars in the sky, but my mom told me that it was actually a plane, because it moved so fast. Mars does not move that fast in the sky. Also, I like to see how the moon follows me everywhere in the car. I thought I was special and it follows me but Moon orbits around the Earth and actually follows the Earth. Some day I want to have a big telescope to see Mars, Jupiter the biggest planet and all the craters on the moon.

3. Geography from A to Z: A Picture Glossary

I read all about Oceans, Lakes, Volcanoes, Springs, Mountains, Bays and Lagoons. I was in Hawaii this summer. I saw a real Volcano, lots and lots of waterfalls, the Pacific Ocean and a Lagoon. I wanted to get near the Volcano but we were not allowed to. I only saw some steam and not lava. That was so boring. But we went inside a lava cave. Water was dripping everywhere but I kind of liked it. My dad and I rowed a boat in a Lagoon. That was so cool. He also snorkeled in a bay. I wanted to see the colorful fishes too but I was very scared so I just played in the beach. We climbed down another bay and walked through a long cave. It was so dark inside but I was not scared at all. I loved Hawaii. When I get big, I want to visit Hawaii every summer.

4. Tintin

I love Tintin. He is so adventurous. Tintin goes to Africa, Egypt and visits the pyramids. Thomson and Thompson confuse me sometimes, I don’t understand everything they say. But that is ok.I don’t have all the books, but my favorite is The Blue Lotus.

5. Enid Blyton the Magic Faraway Tree Collection

I love Enid Blyton. My first Enid Blyton was Mr. Pink-Whistle. I liked how he magically disappears sometimes. He does that only to help people, not to trick them. I wish I could disappear when mom is angry with me.
