What is the Readathon?
Pratham USA Readathon 2014 is a fundraising initiative that encourages kids in the U.S. to read more books and raise money to help less fortunate kids in India learn to read.
How does it work?
Kids ask their friends and family to donate money to Pratham for every book they read. The more books they read, the more money they raise. Learn more here.
Where does my money go?
All donations go to support Pratham’s work for child literacy in India. With the help of trained professionals and dedicated volunteers, Pratham runs pre-schools and after-school programs in many cities and villages of India so that underprivileged children can read, write and count at their appropriate grade level. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or other older siblings read to them, and count those books.
Why participate?
Reading is good for everyone. Reading to help others by participating in this Readathon is a great way to do community service, and enjoy the benefits of reading at the same time – increased vocabulary, improved communication skills and the joy of helping others.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Certificates of Appreciation go to all readers. Prizes will also be given to readers who raise $100, $250, $500, or more. A Young Reader Award will be given to the reader who raises the most money and a Young Leader Award will be given to the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of money.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
A Readathon Coordinator (RC) is a high school student who will lead a team of younger readers and guide, support, and cheer them on in meeting their reading and fundraising goals for the Readathon. A RC will learn good management and leadership skills, and can also enjoy all the benefits of being a reader. For more information, click here.
How do I know if my donation makes a difference?
With every $1,000 raised, Pratham will be able to educate 40 children for one whole year. Readers and donors will receive a story about a group of students helped through money they raised or donated in the Readathon. For reading some stories from last year, click here.

Every book I read helps educate a child in India

Dear Friends and Family,

I am participating in the Pratham USA 2014 Readathon because I want to help less fortunate children in India attend Pratham schools in order to learn to read, write and count well. I have been involved with the Pratham organization for the past four years due to the fact that I believe education is one of the most essential items to achieve success in the world. In India, many children who strive to learn often struggle due to a subpar public education system and a society that breeds poverty and illiteracy. Many times, it is not the child’s desire to learn that is in question, but the resources made available to help them learn that are in question. This is a problem that I believe is 100% solvable. Pratham is a not-for-profit organization that has been educating millions of kids in India since it was founded in 1994. Rather than trying to solve the extremely difficult problem of creating an entirely new and optimal schooling system from scratch, Pratham has tried to address the issue with a much more pragmatic solution, thus not wasting any donated dollars on a problem that can’t be solved. Pratham provides supplemental schooling at a very low overhead that helps kids receive the extra education they may need to excel in school and the outside world. Pratham differs from other charities in that its low cost provides the most action for each dollar that is donated. In addition, Pratham is not a charity that takes in massive amount of donations and throws money at the problem in the hopes of resolving it. Instead, each year, Pratham sends out its annual survey called ASER to assess its progress. In this way Pratham can show donors their results and change any methods that have been shown to be inefficient. The low cost coupled with the annual survey are what make Pratham a worthwhile charity to donate to.

The concept of reading in order to help Pratham is highly symbolic in that improving my knowledge can help improve the education of a less fortunate child in India. This summer I plan to read 10 books in order to show my support for this charity, India, and education in general. With your donation, I hope my reading can truly help to make the world a better place.

Sincerely,
Kalyan Chaliki
