What is the Readathon?
Pratham USA Readathon 2015 is a fundraising initiative that encourages kids in the U.S. to read more books and raise money to help less fortunate kids in India learn to read.
How does it work?
Kids ask their friends and family to donate money to Pratham for every book they read. The more books they read, the more money they raise. Learn more here.
Where does my money go?
All donations to the Readathon go to support Pratham’s work for child education in India. With the help of trained professionals and dedicated volunteers, Pratham runs pre-schools and after-school programs in many cities and villages of India so that underprivileged children can read, write and count at their appropriate grade level. Pratham needs only $25 to educate one child for one whole year.Pratham receives 97% of the money you donate here. 2.9% + 30 cents is charged by the credit card processing company. We thank SeeYourImpact for providing Pratham with its Storytelling Donation platform free of cost.
Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate (adults too!). Children too young to read can have a parent or older siblings read to them.
Why participate?
Reading is good for everyone. Reading to help others learn to read is Great!Participating in this Readathon is an amazing way to do community service, and enjoy the benefits of reading at the same time – increased vocabulary, improved communication skills and the joy of helping others.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Trophies will be given to readers who raise $250 or more. A Young Reader Award for the reader who raises the most money and a Young Leader Award for the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of money. Certificates of Appreciation for all readers. More information is available here.
What is a Readathon Coordinator?
A Readathon Coordinator (RC) is a high school student who will lead a team of younger readers and guide, support, and cheer them on in meeting their reading and fundraising goals for the Readathon. A RC will learn good management and leadership skills, and can also enjoy all the benefits of being a reader. For more information, click here.
How do I know if my donation makes a difference?
With every $1,000 raised, Pratham is able to educate 40 children for one whole year. Readers and donors can read some stories of children who attend Pratham schools by clicking here

Every book I read helps educate a child in India

My name is Arjun Nageswaran. I am a 12 year old boy from Buffalo Grove, IL. I have done the Readathon before and the reason I do it every year is that it gives a platform in which not only does it encourage reading new books, but it helps kids in India get to enjoy the right taken for granted in the US – the right to an education. So while enjoying our own books, we are actually helping more people enjoy other books so everyone can get a chance to experience this joy in life! The Readathon also gives a fair chance for everyone to succeed in life – so even if you were born in poverty, you can receive an education and lead a great life.

I will be posting all the books I’ve read that I’ve never read before starting from June 17, 2015:
1. The Rithamist by Sanderson, Brandon
Summary: This book is basically about a group of people called The Rithamists who can make chalklings come to life and are fighting other people in Nebrask. Joel isn’t a Rithamist, but he wishes that he were and ends up aiding a former Rithamist professor to investigate the mysterious disappearances of Rithamist Students. That’s when he discovers a startling truth about who is responsible for the disappearances.
2. Will in Scarlet by Cody, Matthew
Summary: The backstory on how Robin Hood’s gang formed with a royal who is on the run from officials and turns a rowdy gang into a formidable group that struck fear into the heart of every sheriff in England.
3. Jackpot by Korman, Gordon
Summary: A lottery ticket that is worth millions of dollars has been unclaimed and in a couple of weeks the jackpot will expire. Griffin Bing has to find the owner of the ticket before it expires, in order to get a share of the prize. However, his friends turn against him and they are also searching for the ticket. Will they ever find the owner of the ticket?
4, Rump by Shurtliff, Liesel
Summary: The backstory of Rumpelstiltskin and how he came from a bullied boy to a magical being that was trapped in a rumpel until he found the stiltskin to free himself and find his true name.
5. Unleashed by Korman, Gordon
Summary: Griffin is in an invention competition with his enemy Darren. However, one of his friends also enters the competition and seems to have the prizewinning invention. That invention goes missing mysteriously and Griffin and his friends try to find it.
6. Masterminds by Korman, Gordon
Summary: Serenity, New Mexico is a peaceful town with no crime and a population of 185. One day, Eli’s best friend Randy gets sent to live with his grandparents. However, Eli and his friends realize that Randy was in fact sent to a boarding school in Colorado and they realize they were cloned from some of the biggest criminals in history.
7. The Great War by Various Authors
Summary: A bunch of tales from World War I told by those who lived through the war
8. Golden Boy by Sullivan, Tara
Summary: About an albino boy who lives in Tanzania. Once he is forced to move after the debts weren’t paid off, he finds himself in his aunt’s village where they kill albinos and use their body parts as luck charms and other things. He has to leave all the way to Dar-e-Salaam to escape a hunter who is trying to kill him – but he has no money and doesn’t know anyone there!
9. A Monster Calls by Ness, Patrick
Summary: A boy’s mother has cancer, but he believes she will be all right. However, at 12:07 everyday he is visited by a monster in the shape of a yew tree. Will his mother survive? Why does the monster keep coming?
10. Three of Diamonds by Horowitz, Anthony
Summary: Tim Diamond is a detective – or so he likes to think of himself. In real life, though, he is a detective that doesn’t have common sense or book smarts. His brother Nick is always forced to solve his mysteries for him. Can Nick help Tim in his next mysteries? Or will Tim be in charge and mess it up like all of his previous cases?
11. Uncaged by Sandford, John

His sister tries to save him and together, they try to warn the world about Singularity Labs while trying to escape them.
12. The Recruit by Muchamore, Robert

Both are recruited to CHERUB, a top secret organization comprising of only kids. James (with the new last name of Adams) is recruited in his first mission. Will he succeed in this mission or be a failure and sent to a foster home?
